Staying Steady During the Holidays

The holidays always seem to bring a spike in noise. More schedules, more screens, more social obligations, more mental clutter. I’ve noticed my attention getting pulled in a dozen directions at once, and my usual practice rhythm gets easier to drop.

I’m curious how others work with this. Do you try to protect a daily sit no matter what, or do you adapt your practice during busy periods like this? Any small adjustments or realistic strategies that help you stay connected without adding pressure?

I don’t try to hold the same standard during the holidays. For me, that’s where things usually fall apart. What’s helped is shrinking the practice until it feels almost too easy to skip. Five minutes. Sometimes just one deliberate pause before opening my phone in the morning.

I also remind myself that distraction itself is part of the training right now. The conditions are louder, so noticing that fact is already engagement, not failure. Good luck to you as you navigate the holidays!

I’ve had to let go of the idea that consistency means sameness. During busy stretches, my formal sits get shorter and less frequent, but I try to stay oriented toward awareness throughout the day.

A few things that help: taking one conscious breath before meals, feeling my feet on the ground when moving between places, and noticing the urge to rush without immediately acting on it. It’s not the practice I prefer, but it keeps the thread unbroken.

one thing that’s helped me during this holiday season is getting up a bit earlier than everyone else. it’s often the only quiet pocket in the day, and there’s something grounding about practicing before the momentum starts. even if the rest of the day is full and unpredictable, i notice i’m a little more anchored because i had that moment of stillness first.

It’s been uneven, honestly. Some days I’ve kept a short sit going, other days it’s been more about noticing how quickly attention gets pulled once the day fills up. I’m trying to treat that noticing as part of the practice rather than a sign I’m falling behind.
