Weird distractions - sooo much saliva ๐Ÿ˜…

I have been doing the deeper meditation course and one thing I find is I can have my body still etc but I feel my body goes nuts into producing saliva and having to swallow what feels like every 10-15 seconds or itll fill my mouth and I will drool everywhere :joy:
Please tell me Iโ€™m not the only one?!

Ha! Youโ€™re definitely not the only one. Itโ€™s surprisingly common once the body starts settling and the mind gets quieter. A lot of the little background processes we normally ignore suddenly become very noticeable. Saliva, swallowing, itching, temperature shifts, all that stuff can move to the foreground of awareness.

In my experience it usually evens out over time. And in the meantime, just swallowing when you need to tends to work better than trying to fight it.

So funny, thanks for sharing this.

I havenโ€™t had the saliva thing myself, but when I first started meditating my eyes would water like crazy. I was sitting in group settings and always felt like people must think I was crying. It wasnโ€™t tied to any emotion at all, just a weird physiological response that would kick in as soon as I got still.

The body does some unexpected things when you start paying attention to it more closely. Youโ€™re definitely not the only one!

I had a phase like this, not with saliva exactly but with swallowing in general. It suddenly felt like I had to manage it, and the more I noticed it, the more it seemed to happen.

It only showed up once things got quiet, like those background processes had been there all along, just unnoticed.

For a while I kept wondering if I was interfering somehow, but eventually it just stopped being such a focal point. Either it settled, or my attention stopped circling it as much. Hard to say which.

But yeah, definitely not just you.

I get this. Especially on retreat and start feeling super self conscious (I am being too loud). Over time it has gone away but does sometimes come back. I would watch the tension/resistance (if any) in the body and mind and release it and just keep swallowing when needed. Eventually the body seems to become natural again and it either puts the tongue in a position where you donโ€™t have to, or just happens on its own. Hope that helps.
