Transcendental Meditation course

Hi, I have used FitMind for some time and have improved but still struggle to switch my mind off. I have enrolled in a Transcendental Meditation course and wondering what advice, comments etc anyone might have. Will it make a difference?

Hi Eleanor, welcome to the FitMind Club! I was just perusing the Intro thread and came across a post from scolmenares who mentions she has experience with TM. Tagging her here in case she can share some wisdom.

Also, a few years ago, Liam did a podcast with Bob Roth the CEO of The David Lynch Foundation and major figure in the TM world you might find interesting: Bob Roth - The Science of Transcendental Meditation (TM) — FitMind

Personally, I went to a TM info session many years ago and thought it seemed interesting, but couldn’t afford the fee at the time!

We’d be interested to hear about your experience, so please keep us updated as you go along!

Sure! As I mentioned somewhere else, I started meditating with TM in Chicago, IL. I went to an intro to this method (free) and then enrolled in Level 1 (paid). I decided to move forward after the intro because it made sense to me their approach. Basically, it helps to get into focus and to get there you will start to notice how many thoughts cross your mind! (monkey mind). At the beginning, I noticed as I was fighting myself (in my mind) resisting to focus. So, yes, I think is a method that can help to get into meditation mode and make it a routine. You will practice twice a day for 20 min each.

Forgot to mention. The method includes three different levels. BUT the Level 1 encompasses or includes what you need to know. It’s like the other two are additions, but L1 is mostly what you need to know from this method. I did the second level, but didn’t add anything to me  .

Thanks so much for responding! I have been a long time meditator but rarely feel like I am making progress. I have chronic insomnia so I am hoping that TM will make the difference. Can’t wait for the course in 2 weeks! Thanks…

I don’t suffer insomnia in general but sometimes. However, I like to practice Yoga Nidra or Progressive Relaxation almost every night from the Sleep and Dreams module at FitMind. I change the Preferred Training Duration in the app settings to have it longer than how is set by default  .

I hope it helps your insomnia. I second what @scolmenares said about Yoga Nidra and Progressive Relaxation on the app. I use them both frequently to help when I wake in the night and can’t easily go back to sleep. Not sure if you’d tried those yet, but worth a shot!

Keep us updated! I’ll be curious to hear how the TM experience is for you.

Hi Ashley, Thanks for your post. I have now completed the course and I’m so glad I did it. I found it incredibly helpful and I have gone from someone who always struggled to meditate to someone who meditates twice a day and I am going pretty deep for at least one of those sessions. I feel more clarity of mind and energized in general. Also sleeping marginally better but I realise it takes time and practice so I will definitely keep going…

That is so awesome to hear! I’m so glad it’s going well for you. :growing_heart:

I have done the level 1 TM training and incorporate it into the different meditation techniques I use. I find it’s really helpful when I want to go deep into open awareness but want some structure to help me get there.
